S velkým i malým „s“.

Wheels of Justice

Two men happened to meet at the Czech Police Department in Prague 2: the former government minister Vladimir Mlynar (from an old Jewish family living in Prague) who had received a stunning sentence the day before – five years and six months in prison for his ministerial oversight. The other one was a Kurdish doctor (with Armenian grandmothers miraculously saved from Turkish genocide), Yekta Uzunoglu. Mlynar was crushed by the news. For the very first time he encountered and tasted the arbitrary rule of the Czech police-judicial machine over the course of recent months and as a matter of fact right now. Dr. Uzunoglu was smiling, he was full of abundant energy and ideas. He came to the police department to initiate another round of criminal investigations regarding the unlawful conduct of our police-judicial machine.

Mlynar approached Dr. Uzunoglu: „How did you manage to keep going almost thirteen years, Dr. Uzunoglu?“ He should have added – and the initial thirty one months spent pending trial in the hardest and often quite inhumane conditions of Czech custody!

Dr. Uzunoglu expressed his regret but reminded him that when Respekt Magazine, Mlynar being the editor-in-chief of this magazine at that time, became involved in Dr. Uzunoglu´s case and played an active role, he, as the editor-in-chief did not really like it. At that time Uzunoglu tried to explain to him that it was not just a matter of his own case but that all of us could find ourselves caught up in a similar situation. Ten years later, Mlynar might have grasped what Mr. Uzunoglu was talking about on those previous occasions. The wheels of justice turn slowly, but surely. Ten years have passed and now it is Mlynar’s turn. Tomorrow it may be Mr. Novak´s – a Czech John Doe, the day after tomorrow Mr. Novotny‎´s and then, perhaps the turn of Mr. Svoboda, which, in Czech, means freedom. Spelled with both capital and small initial letters, Freedom and freedom!

In Franz Kafka´s, Jaroslav Hasek´s and the Berdych gang´s Prague absolutely anything is possible. Unfortunately - we do not derive comfort from Parliament or from the Ministries of (in?)Justice or the Internal Affairs, nor from the prosecuting attornies and courts of law but again from the slowly grinding „wheels of justice“: at least two of the policemen who arrested Dr. Uzunoglu are now behind bars: one of them, named Opava, for fourteen years on end!
